What are your spiritual practices for your own self care? Do you engage in any special preparation before you coach a client or while coaching? What are they and does the client participate also? Are you known for spirituality before your clients hire you or do you introduce it when you feel led to? Do you use any structures like incense, daily guidance cards, or crystals? How do your clients respond to this?

I admit, I was being coached one day and asked the coach, "How do you know when it's OK to introduce the subject of spiritual practices with a client? I don't want to scare anyone off."

She literally laughed and asked, "What is the name of your business?"

Doh! I had a Homer moment. "Stirring the Spirit Within," I answered sheepishly.

"Don't you think they know what you're about?" she asked.

It's true, most people who come to me do so because of things they've read that I've posted somewhere that express the essence of who I am and my life's journey so far.

Personally, I follow New Thought/Unity, Buddhism, the Moses Code, the law of attraction in a spiritual sense (not I will manifest stuff) and being present (Eckhart Tolle/Ram Dass). Meditation, guided or otherwise--burning incense or sage, deep breathing, and aligning my intent and energy with my inner wisdom or higher power to stay centered tap in to my intuitive self-center me and give me strength and guidance.

I read the Daily Word and DailyOm and I have been known to draw daily guidance cards like Messages from the Faires or Angels for myself.

Now what do I do with clients? I have done guided meditations to put them in touch with their high selves. I discuss how I see them as capable and complete now. I help them uncover their core values, and life purpose if they are looking for it. I try to help clients design supports and structures in their lives that will support them in their evolving journeys--whether they are material or spiritual.

I haven't used daily guidance cards with my clients and my heart is saying "Do it!" I do it well--I've done readings for people in another area of my life, but coaching?? This is a recent dilemma for me. I know I could use them with some clients--But I'm feeling the judgment already. It's coming from me--"What will they think of you? my brain is screaming-It's to Woo Woo--Real coaches will look down on you........"

I also have "The Work" (Byron Katie) cards--Loving What Is. They have sayings like: "You move away from reality when you believe that there is a legitimate reason to suffer." "Everyone is a mirror image of yourself--you own thinking coming back at you."

What do you think?

Hi Jude - My main practice is daily meditation. It's one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself. It will literally evolve you forward, reduce/eliminate unnecessary stress, help you sleep well (vital for everyone, especially a coach), balance your brain hemispheres, help you reframe problems into opportunities, become conscious of your unconscious beliefs - so you can alter them if needed, and most of all, it puts you in communication with your Higher Self.

I talk about spirituality directly, if the client brings it up.

I am in several other coaching groups online--one at the Co-Active Network where I'm in a niche group for spirituality and coaching. There had been several posts about having a call where we could all get together in a "scared space" and share our intentions for ourselves and our clients. I had never led a tele-conference, so I offered to organize and lead the first call. What a treat! We started with a few moments of silently aligning our intentions for the call. I then led the group with a guided meditation inward putting us in touch with our higher selves before opening up the cal to a round table of sharing our intentions of what we'd like to see this group do: a monthly call was decided on where we will take turns organizing and leading along with sharing a tool we use with clients (meditations, techniques, etc..), supporting each other in being open with our spirituality when we are led to and to attract clients that are in alignment with this.

I've discovered that one of my strengths is in organizing and leading-something I have to watch when I'm coaching! (the leading part anyway).

Cool story Jude! Organizing and leading are wonderful strengths to possess - and you're right, we use them sparingly while coaching, but a tiny bit at just the right moment can be golden. Keep fine-tuning and you'll be a master in no time.

BTW, I think you meant "sacred space" rather than "scared space", which would produce dramatically different results!

Keep up the great work - Julia

Hi Jude,
I think there is something there when two people meet whether on a professional or personal
level. I try to come to a place of an empty vessel; sort of a position where i can and will gain
from the coaching process as much as the client. I desire to clear myself of myself so that i can
actually be there as much as i can (in the moment). I ask and do pay attention to what i'm asking;
specifically in prayer, because, the client is doing most of the work; i'm the curious ,but patient
passenger experiencing the road and the surroundings ; listening intently but playing an active
role. So ,yes, sprituality does play an important part for me and my clients. My clients sort of sense
my presence! We sense each other's presence. I look forward to getting to know more about your
work and all the other coaches here on this site! Many thanks to Julie Stewart regarding her true vision for
bringing people and communities togoether!

I just read a great article by Mark Silver at his Business Heart e-zine titled "Spirituality in Your Business Without Scaring Clients". He speaks to the idea that many people desire a connection to wholeness and if you are connecting to your own Spirit within to make all that you do in life come into alignment--why withhold it from your clients? But do it so that it doesn't smack of this is the only or right way. Share little bits here and there when appropriate. If they want more, they'll ask for it. I'm finding (maybe attracting) more coaching clients who want coaching around setting and allowing intentions for a more balanced life. To learn how to trust their inner knowing and intuition that will take them to the next level. People everywhere want to know who they are at the core of their being and to be able to live in alignment with those values authentically.

If I value spirituality, authenticity, & harmony and live true to these ideals, I will be more of these very things into my life. Trusting in the One Source pulls me forward. How about you?

Hi,

Great questions.

I do a daily quiet time of scripture reading, devotionals, and prayer. I attend a weekly small group, and weekly worship.

I try and put my faith out front when I can.

I pray before helping anyone.

Paul
